Lyon

Lyon sits between two rivers and plays football on both banks. Indoor five-a-side halls, school courts and synthetic pitches across the metropolis fill every evening with teams. In spring 2027 the MCC Major Champions Cup puts a 5-a-side tournament on three Lyon grounds, Villeurbanne/East, West Lyon and Venissieux/South, and the champions race towards the World Final on 7 July.

Three grounds, three champions

Two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock. Every team plays three group matches in a group of four, and the top two go into the playoffs, where a tie level after two halves goes to penalties. Five weeks of football on each ground leave Lyon with three Pitch Champions, and each goes straight to the Country Championship.

Foot à 5 between the Rhone and the Saone

Lyon supports Olympique Lyonnais, whose stadium stands east of the city in Decines, and the club's long run of success has left the area with a taste for the game. The small-sided version happens in commercial foot à 5 centres, municipal gymnasiums and works leagues, with student teams from the Rhone campuses and neighbourhood sides in the suburbs.

The format stays close to what those teams play. Squads can reach nine, a stop clock runs through two 15-minute halves, slots last 40 minutes and a four-team group means three matches. Two go through to the playoffs, with penalties for a level tie.

Villeurbanne, the west and Venissieux

Villeurbanne/East draws teams from Villeurbanne, Bron and the eastern edge of the metropolis, out towards Decines and the stadium. West Lyon serves Vaise, Ecully, Tassin-la-Demi-Lune and the hills across the Saone. Venissieux/South covers Venissieux, Saint-Fons and the southern districts of the metropolis.

Metro, tram, bus and suburban trains bring teams in, so a squad's usual commute guides its choice of ground. Between 64 and 128 teams fit at each, and each has its own Pitch Champion. A venue is confirmed ground by ground and shown on the live cards after signing.

A Lyon spring and the French Country Championship

April in Lyon is cool and changeable; May usually warms up, with light until nine. The group stage is played over 9 to 11, 16 to 18 and 23 to 25 April 2027, the playoffs open on 30 April, and the final for each ground is on 9 May.

After that the three Lyon Pitch Champions face winners from Paris, Marseille and Lille at the Country Championship, 28 to 30 May 2027. The continental stage then awaits the French winners, and the World Final falls on 7 July 2027.

Beyond the Lyon company cup

Company and club cups are common in Lyon and usually done in a day. MCC is a five-week season with a published schedule and one Team Licence per side, and $20,000 goes to every ground's champion. Only amateurs may play, a Team President must be named for each entry, and the conduct policy has zero tolerance.
