Montevideo

Montevideo is a small capital with a football pedigree out of proportion to its size, home to the Estadio Centenario and two clubs, Penarol and Nacional, that split the city. Fútbol 5 and futsal courts are everywhere. The MCC Montevideo tournament runs three grounds, West, Central and East, between 9 April and 9 May 2027, and sends its Pitch Champions to a Uruguayan final and then the continental stage.

Three grounds, three champions

Two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock. Every team plays three group matches in a group of four, and the top two go into the playoffs, where a tie level after two halves goes to penalties. Five weeks of football on each ground leave Montevideo with three Pitch Champions, and each goes straight to the Country Championship.

Fútbol 5 along the Rambla

Uruguayans start young, in baby fútbol leagues that run across the neighbourhoods, and many keep playing as adults on small-sided pitches. Fútbol 5 and futsal fixtures fill the evenings in Pocitos, Cordon, La Teja and Carrasco, and friends who play on a regular night often make up a club in all but name.

The MCC format fits that habit: five a side, nine players at most per squad, two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock and a group of four. Teams that already play weekly can enter as they are, provided every player is an amateur.

West, Central and East Montevideo

The city lies along the Rio de la Plata, so its three grounds divide it into west, centre and east. West Montevideo is the side of the Cerro, La Teja and the bay. Central Montevideo covers the Centro, Cordon, Tres Cruces and Parque Rodo. East Montevideo covers the coastal barrios toward Pocitos, Malvin and Carrasco.

Each ground plays its own round, so a team registers for the one it can reach by bus on a weekday evening. The pitch owner programme names a single venue for each ground, and the cards on this page show which are already announced.

Autumn weather and the road to the Country Championship

April and May are autumn in Montevideo, mild and often grey, with wind off the river and cooler evenings. The group stage starts on 9 April and its third weekend ends on 25 April. Playoffs open on 30 April, and the three finals are played on 9 May.

Uruguay has no second host city, so the three Montevideo champions contest the national title among themselves on 28 to 30 May 2027. Whoever wins moves directly to the continental stage, and the World Final is on 7 July 2027.

Beyond the neighbourhood tournament

Montevideo has its own tradition of local and neighbourhood tournaments. MCC adds a published format, a $20,000 prize for the winner of each ground and an international bracket. Only amateur teams may enter, each with a named Team President, and the conduct policy is zero tolerance, up to revoking a licence without refund.

Questions from Montevideo

How does a team enter MCC in Montevideo?

Register on this site and pick one of Montevideo's three grounds: West Montevideo, Central Montevideo, East Montevideo. One Team License per team: USD 1,200 for one year until 1 March 2027 (then 2,500), or 5,000 for three years. Payment and KYC verification follow the application.

When does the tournament start in Montevideo?

The Pitch Round runs 9 April to 9 May 2027 on all three Montevideo grounds. The group matches are played on 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25 April, the playoffs from 30 April, and each ground's final on 9 May. Pitch Champions go straight to the Country Championship on 28-30 May 2027.

How many teams can play in Montevideo?

Up to 384: each of the three grounds takes up to 128 teams, and each needs a minimum of 64 to run its round. A full ground puts an entry on its waitlist instead of turning it away.

What can a Montevideo team win?

$20,000 per Pitch Champion, $150,000 for the Uruguay title, $500,000 continental and $5,000,000 for the World Champion - plus championship rings from Country level up.

Is fútbol 5 the same game MCC plays?

Close enough to enter. MCC plays five players a side, nine at most in a squad, in two 15-minute halves on a stop clock. A fútbol 5 or futsal team from Montevideo can register as long as all players are amateurs.

Which ground suits a team from Pocitos or Carrasco?

East Montevideo covers the coastal barrios from Pocitos to Carrasco, so it is the nearest for those teams. Each ground plays a full round, so there is no benefit in travelling to a different one.

What does a Uruguay Country Championship look like with one city?

The three Montevideo Pitch Champions play each other on 28 to 30 May 2027, and the winner goes to the continental stage. There is no other Uruguayan host city, so the Uruguay title is decided between the three.

Can a team from outside Montevideo enter?

Yes. A team from Canelones, Ciudad de la Costa or elsewhere in Uruguay may register for the Montevideo ground nearest to it. The rules are the same: amateur players, a Team President and one licence.
