Cape Town

Cape Town plays between the mountain and two oceans, on school fields in the Cape Flats, astro pitches in the Southern Suburbs and community courts out toward Somerset West. A 5-a-side tournament comes to the city in 2027 on three grounds, opening on 9 April, with the winners heading to the national final and then the World Final on 7 July.

Three grounds, three champions

Two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock. Every team plays three group matches in a group of four, and the top two go into the playoffs, where a tie level after two halves goes to penalties. Five weeks of football on each ground leave Cape Town with three Pitch Champions, and each goes straight to the Country Championship.

Football across the Peninsula and the Winelands

Small-sided play in the Western Cape runs on hired astro pitches, church halls with indoor courts and school grounds. Office leagues in the city bowl meet on weeknights, and community teams in Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha and Bellville fill the weekends. The city's pro teams, Cape Town City and Ajax Cape Town, give the sport a local following.

A team that already plays a regular game has what MCC asks for: nine players at most, two 15-minute halves on a stop clock, and a group of four with three matches before the playoffs begin, so a weekly side is already most of the way there.

Three grounds from Durbanville to Gordon's Bay

The Northern Suburbs ground serves Bellville, Durbanville, Parow, Milnerton and the area up the N1 and N7. Central/Southern Suburbs covers the city bowl, Observatory, Claremont, Wynberg and Constantia, along with the Cape Flats beyond. Helderberg/East has Somerset West, Strand and Gordon's Bay.

Distances are long and traffic builds on the N2 and the M3, so the best ground is the one a squad can reach after work. Most travel is by car, minibus taxi, MyCiTi bus or Metrorail, and each ground plays its own complete round.

Autumn weather and the way to the national final

Autumn at the Cape is mild and mostly dry in April, then wetter in May as the winter rains arrive, so the closing days of the Pitch Round (9 April to 9 May 2027) may be damp. Group games take the weekends of 9, 16 and 23 April, the playoffs begin at the end of the month and each ground's final is on 9 May.

Cape Town's champions travel to the South Africa Country Championship, 28 to 30 May 2027, to face the Johannesburg winners. The African continental stage comes after that, then the World Final on 7 July. The top prize on the whole ladder is $5,000,000.

A Cape Town tournament that leads somewhere

Beach cups, corporate days and school fundraisers are everywhere around the Cape. MCC differs by publishing its format, paying $20,000 to each Pitch Champion and sending winners onward. Only amateurs play, every entry carries a named Team President, and the conduct policy gives no second chance for serious breaches.

How does a team enter MCC in Cape Town?

Register on this site and pick one of Cape Town's three grounds: Northern Suburbs, Central/Southern Suburbs, Helderberg/East. One Team License per team: USD 1,200 for one year until 1 March 2027 (then 2,500), or 5,000 for three years. Payment and KYC verification follow the application.

When does the tournament start in Cape Town?

The Pitch Round runs 9 April to 9 May 2027 on all three Cape Town grounds. The group matches are played on 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25 April, the playoffs from 30 April, and each ground's final on 9 May. Pitch Champions go straight to the Country Championship on 28-30 May 2027.

How many teams can play in Cape Town?

Up to 384: each of the three grounds takes up to 128 teams, and each needs a minimum of 64 to run its round. A full ground puts an entry on its waitlist instead of turning it away.

What can a Cape Town team win?

$20,000 per Pitch Champion, $150,000 for the South Africa title, $500,000 continental and $5,000,000 for the World Champion - plus championship rings from Country level up.

Which Cape Town ground covers Claremont, Wynberg and the city bowl?

Central/Southern Suburbs. The Northern Suburbs ground serves Bellville, Durbanville and Milnerton, and Helderberg/East serves Somerset West, Strand and Gordon's Bay. Choose by where most of your squad lives and works.

What are April and May like in Cape Town for a tournament?

April is mild and mostly dry, and May brings the first winter rain to the Western Cape. The Pitch Round runs from 9 April to 9 May 2027: three group weekends, playoffs from 30 April and each ground's final on the last day.

Can a team from the Cape Flats or Khayelitsha enter?

Yes. Any amateur side can enter with a Team License, and the squad can hold up to nine players. A team should choose the ground that its members can reach without a long evening journey.

Do we play Johannesburg teams during the Cape Town round?

No. Each ground runs its own Pitch Round and crowns its own champion. Cape Town and Johannesburg teams first meet at the South Africa Country Championship at the end of May 2027.
