Athens already organises its football in small groups: friends who book a rented pitch, office teams, neighbourhood sides who have played the same night for years. The MCC Athens tournament gives those teams a 2027 season to aim at. Three grounds cover the basin, each crowns a Pitch Champion, and the winners step onto a ladder that ends with the World Final on 7 July 2027.
Three grounds, three champions
Two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock. Every team plays three group matches in a group of four, and the top two go into the playoffs, where a tie level after two halves goes to penalties. Five weeks of football on each ground leave Athens with three Pitch Champions, and each goes straight to the Country Championship.

Five-a-side in a city of rented pitches
Greeks usually call the small-sided game 5x5, and most of it is played on rented artificial pitches wedged between apartment blocks, booked by the hour and often by the same group every week. The big clubs, Panathinaikos, Olympiacos and AEK, shape where people's loyalties sit, but the pitch a team actually plays on is a local one.
That habit is the entry requirement. A team with a regular weekly game, a squad of five to nine and a willing Team President has what an MCC entry needs. The match format is the 5-a-side that Athenian teams already know, played as two halves of 15 minutes on a stop clock in a 40-minute slot.
North Athens, West Athens and Piraeus/South
The three grounds split the basin by direction. North Athens looks toward the northern suburbs and the line of Kifisias Avenue. West Athens covers the districts past Egaleo and toward Peristeri. Piraeus/South faces the port and the coast road toward Faliro and Glyfada. Every ground seats a field of 64 to 128 teams and finishes its own bracket, so a team can simply take the nearest.
Getting around is easiest by metro, tram and bus, with the Athens ring road as the car option. Venues are confirmed through the MCC pitch owner programme, one per ground, and each is announced on this page after its agreement is signed. The ground cards above show where that stands.
April and May in Attica, then the road out
Spring is the easy part of the Athenian year. April and May bring mild days, longer light and low rain odds, which suits evening and weekend kickoffs. The group games take the weekends beginning 9, 16 and 23 April; the knockout phase opens on 30 April, and by 9 May each of the three grounds has its champion.
Greece has no other host city, so the three Athens champions meet in the Country Championship on 28 to 30 May without an extra qualifier. After that comes the continental stage, and for whoever keeps winning the World Final on 7 July 2027.
How MCC differs from the one-night cup
Athens has plenty of weekend cups and company days, and they are good fun. MCC is built differently: a published format, a group of four with three matches, playoffs, penalties for a level playoff tie, and a $20,000 prize for each Pitch Champion. It is for amateur teams only, with a conduct policy that carries no second chances.

How does a team enter MCC in Athens?
Register on this site and pick one of Athens's three grounds: North Athens, West Athens, Piraeus/South. One Team License per team: USD 1,200 for one year until 1 March 2027 (then 2,500), or 5,000 for three years. Payment and KYC verification follow the application.
When does the tournament start in Athens?
The Pitch Round runs 9 April to 9 May 2027 on all three Athens grounds. The group matches are played on 9-11, 16-18 and 23-25 April, the playoffs from 30 April, and each ground's final on 9 May. Pitch Champions go straight to the Country Championship on 28-30 May 2027.
How many teams can play in Athens?
Up to 384: each of the three grounds takes up to 128 teams, and each needs a minimum of 64 to run its round. A full ground puts an entry on its waitlist instead of turning it away.
What can a Athens team win?
$20,000 per Pitch Champion, $150,000 for the Greece title, $500,000 continental and $5,000,000 for the World Champion - plus championship rings from Country level up.
Does an Athens team have to be registered with a league?
No. The entry is for amateur teams of five to nine players, led by a named Team President. Teams from rented-pitch leagues, workplaces or neighbourhood groups can all enter, and so can a side put together for the 2027 season.
Who wins a place in the Country Championship from Athens?
The Pitch Champion of each of the three Athens grounds. As Greece has only one host city, those champions go directly to the national final weekend at the end of May 2027 without any extra qualifying round.
Can a team from Piraeus enter the North Athens ground?
Teams register for the ground that suits them, so a Piraeus side could choose any of the three. Most will pick the nearest, since every ground plays the same dates and the same format.
